Watch FOS Chat for changes and announcements, late Wednesday Evening.

Week of 28 January - 3 February 2018

FOS is pleased to have THREE groups of bicycle riders, three great leaders, allowing you to choose a speed and distance that fits your comfort level, all the while meeting up for a noon (11:45am) gathering for Lunch, Picnic, Ice Cream and some socializing before completing your desired # of miles for the day. This weeks schedule follows:

TUESDAY: 30 January 10:00am, meet at the Campground Laundry Parking Lot, ready to ride to GT’s On The BAY at 26189 Canal Rd., OB., arriving about 11:45am, Rain or Shine. Following our lunch we’ll complete our ‘desired miles’ as we return to the CG by many different routes. Don’t forget your GT Coupons for some savings.

THURSDAY: 01 February 10:00am, same meeting place, riding to MATT’s HOMEMADE ICE CREAM at 1308 Gulf Shores Pkwy, GS arriving at around 11:45 am. FOS will be their first customers of the season and they are ready for us. This is a perfect venue for our large group. Coupon Check reminder.

SATURDAY: 03 February 10:00am, same meeting place, we’ll be headed for a fun place to PICNIC, BYO, hopefully by the Beach if the weathers right, quite possibly at the PAVILION on the Beach crossing over the Beach Hwy at the most convenient crossing light. Remember, Saturday is the FARMER’S MARKET at that location and it should still be open at our arrival time, 11:45am.

It’s time to start thinking 2019 RALLY. We’re looking for possible site suggestions so please share your ideas. One idea being bandied around is Lanesboro, Minnesota area and the ROOT RIVER STATE TRAIL. This location has beautiful trails, many local attractions, and a good Campground / Golf Course attached.

The 2018 RALLY has been planned, organized, and reserved on the Cuyahoga Trail System in the Cleveland Ohio area. I believe we could still fit you in if you are thinking of joining those already reserved. Go to fos.bike and check ‘rallies’ tab for info or phone #’s to call.

Week of 21 - 27 January 2018

COOL WEATHER doesn’t stop many of the FOS riders from enjoying a great riding experience to warm refreshments at the many speciality businesses in the area and still get in lots of ‘miles’. This weeks schedule follows:

MONDAY: 22 JANUARY, 5:00pm, RE SCHEDULE the **SUNSET CAMPFIRE** and baked potato Pot Luck, to be held Tuesday instead. High rain possibility.

TUESDAY: 23 JANUARY, 10:00am meet at the Campground Laundry and ride to a favorite ‘specialty treat’ shoppe to be determined at the start of the ride. Suggestions are welcomed. The objective here is to ‘eat lite’ since we’ll be having our pot-luck Campfire that evening. Bring chairs, table service, and drinks.

THURSDAY: 25 JANUARY, 10:00am, this will be our RESTURANT for lunch ride to ‘FLIPPERS’ SEAFOOD AND OYSTER BAR at 5749 Bay La Launch Ave., Orange Beach. We will arrive there at about 11:45am after riding awhile in this beautiful area of Orange Beach.

FRIDAY: 26 JANUARY, 10:00am looks to be a good day to KAYAK so meet at the Laundry Parking Lot ready to caravan to Graham Creek Nature Reserve, 23460 Wolf Bay Dr., Foley, Al. Bring a lunch or snack as we will paddle up 45 minutes and back and will need boost of nourishment mid paddle.

Safety ideas to consider:
1. ‘Two bikes length’ between you and the rider ahead.
2.’Announce’ if you pass another biker or pedestrian.
3. Use Hand Signals for turning, stopping, or hazards ahead.
4. Helmets are recommended, spare tube for your tire size, a must!
5. Pass the ‘word’ up the line if you have difficulties so your leader and others can help you resolve your issue.
6. At all crossings, ‘Cross at your own risk’. Don’t trust “all clear” . Check for yourself to be sure.

As the ‘date’ get’s closer we’ll confirm or reschedule based on the weather.

We ride in cooler temperatures by dressing warmer and designing the ride route to take advantage of the protective wind- blocking areas and running with the winds when we can. We do not ride in wet or rainy times. If you have mechanical trouble on the trail and need assistance, call Jim 231-598-0383 or your group leader for help.

SATURDAY: 13 January 10:00am meet to ride to one of our many PICNIC LUNCH areas. Bring your own LUNCH. The location TBD at the start of our ride.

We are encouraging Three(3) riding groups based on individual riding comfort levels. Group1 = fastest riders at 11-13mph, 20-30 miles: Group2= ‘half fast’ riders at 9-10 mph, 15-18 miles, and Group3 = ‘quarter fast’ riders at 8-9 mph, 12-15 miles. All ranges based on the days riding conditions. We want ALL abilities to join in and enjoy the exercise and friendships of this group of FOS. Helmets are encouraged. Don’t forget to have with you a spare TUBE that fits your Tire size. REMINDER: ALL groups have FUN and get regular EXERCISE.

Those that ride to the rear of the pack, please advise your leader, by passing up the line, if someone has trouble or has stopped so we can render aid. If anyone riding has physical / health issues remember your i-phone has ‘911’ for medical emergency reporting. Find your location and near-by crossroads on MAPS on your iPhone as well. You are encouraged to have on your body some sort of medical ID, Road ID or Med-Alert identification showing your name, address, age and any medical issues EMS would need to be aware of, for caring for you, should you need their help. Bracelets, neckless’s, etc, are available on line. We leave nobody BEHIND! Please help make that a reality.

SATURDAY 06 January, 10:00am meet at the usual spot for a ride to a protected PICNIC AREA to delight in the eating of your Gourmet Lunch, BYO.

For those FOS newly arriving and needing some ‘breaking in’ we strive to have possibly three groups- fast, half-fast, and 1/4 fast to accommodate your ‘getting up to speed’ and adjusted. Unfortunately we DON’T supply BUTT BUTTER, hence another motto we use often, ‘no pain-no gain’. We don’t leave anyone behind, usually.
